Founded in 1817 in Detroit as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, 20 years before the Michigan Territory became a state, the University of Michigan is the state's oldest university. In 1821, the university was officially renamed the University of Michigan. It moved to Ann Arbor in 1837 onto 40 acres (16 ha) of what is now known as Central Campus. Since its establishment in Ann Arbor, the university campus has expanded to include more than 584 major buildings with a combined area of more than 34 million gross square feet (780 acres; 3.2 km2) spread out over a Central Campus and North Campus, two satellite campuses in Flint and Dearborn, and a Center in Detroit. The University was a founding member of the Association of American Universities. Considered one of the foremost research universities in the United States,[8] Michigan is classified as a Doctoral University with Very High Research by the Carnegie Foundation. Its comprehensive graduate program offers doctoral degrees in the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as well as professional degrees in architecture, business, medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing, social work, public health, and dentistry. Michigan's body of living alumni comprises more than 540,000 people, one of the largest alumni bases of any university in the world.[9] Besides academic life, Michigan's athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are collectively known as the Wolverines. They are members of the Big Ten Conference.

PyData Ann Arbor Meetup - February 15, 2018 Sponsored by NumFOCUS and TD Ameritrade https://www.meetup.com/PyData-Ann-Arbor/ Katy Huff | Doing Our Best: Practices in Open, Reproducible, Scientific Computing This talk will touch on best practices and approaches to building software and simulations for scientific computation. These include concepts covered in the paper 'Best Practices in Scientific Computing' (Wilson, et al) as well as concepts covered in 'Effective Computation in Physics' (Scopatz, Huff). It describes a set of practices that are easy to adopt and have proven effective in many research settings. None of these practices will guarantee efficient, error-free software development, but used in concert they will reduce the number of errors in scientific software, make it easier to reuse, and save the authors of the software time and effort that can used for focusing on the underlying scientific questions. This talk will also touch on pain points and lessons learned from a series of case studies of real scientists doing their best, recently published in 'The Practice of Reproducible Research' (Kitzes, Deniz, Turek editors). About Dr. Kathryn Huff is an unapologetic advocate for open reproducible scientific computing and for emissions-free base-load nuclear energy. She is currently a Blue Waters Assistant Professor in the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There, she leads the Advanced Reactors and Fuel Cycles Research Group. She was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow with both the Nuclear Science and Security Consortium and the Berkeley Institute for Data Science at the University of California - Berkeley. She received her PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2013 and her undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Chicago. Through leadership with the Hacker Within, Software Carpentry, SciPy, the Journal of Open Source Software, and other initiatives, she strives to advocate for best practices in open, reproducible scientific computing. With colleagues, collaborators, and friends, she has co-authored two books to help scientists with these practices.

Welcome to Josie's Journey first video post! I'm hoping to make video journals for memory keeping and to share with friends and family what I am up to. I also hope that it will be an opportunity to try something new and an outlet for creativity. Josie's Journey hopes to follow Josie as she goes on the journey of life. I plan on vlogging while studying abroad so I plan to practice over winter break. Expect to see some more posts over the following weeks. If you would like to be alerted when new videos come out, please subscribe to my channel. Equipment: Samsung Galaxy S8+ Music: Everybody by Podington Bear (Album: Carefree) --- This semester was really tough. There were many trials and pain, but coming out of it I can still say I have things to be thankful for and I'm glad that I am feeling better. I had a great freshman year in college last year, and I was hoping that this semester would continue in the fun and excitement. Summer was packed full and I came to school already burned out. But, I thought coming back and being with friends and on campus would help solve everything including my slight constant down mood. But, it didn't seem to happen that way. Even from the beginning of the semester, I started losing motivation, questioning life, and just being down. It did not help that my stomach was constantly in pain. I felt like I was just dragging my feet through life with a dark shadow filling my mind. All I wanted to do was sit down, stay there, and rest for a long while. It was a hard journey of trying to find meaning in life again and seeking help to relieve the pain. But, I was able to with the help of friends, medical attention, and God. There was great frustration and anxiety and fear, but there was always people there with me to help me through it. Point me to the truth and pray for me. This semester, I learned that there can be lies that run through my head, but I have the authority in Jesus Christ to cast them out. My life group this year had Hebrews 12 for its passage: 4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? 8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live! 10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees. 13 “Make level paths for your feet,” so that the lame may not be disabled, but rather healed. Someone told me that we go through difficult trials in life so we can see where we are with God. When I was going through this semester, I was like I don't want to be disciplined. It is too hard. But, now coming out of it, I can say that there were good things I have gained. I have learned to become more patient. I have been able to feel supported and loved by other people. I have been able to use my experiences to understand and relate to other people who may be struggling with similar things. I learned that my faith is not where I want it to be, but I am more motivated to learn more about God and build up my faith. I am also so thankful for my friends and the people in my life this year. I have been able to grow closer to them as we shared struggles and tribulations together. Academically, I was not gaining so much from my classes. However, I am still thankful that two of the classes (one of which I dropped) helped me learn to think in different ways. I really appreciate when I learn how to think from courses in college because I feel like much of the material might be forgotten, but the method of approaching questions or problems will be an acquired skill for future situations. I'm so happy, that although it was a tough semester, I can end and say thanks be to God!
